5. Link and import files

5.1.  Link files (.svg .ora .kra)

Shortcut: Ctrl+L

In ENVE the way of placing instances in the Scene varies between Link and Import depending on the file format to be imported.

A linked file is a file referenced within the Scene. Linked files will be displayed in the Files palette. From that palette you can right-click to reload, replace and delete the file.

ENVE allows linking files from the .eve programme itself and the following file formats:

.ev

ENVE’s own files. You can link Scenes and then copy and paste the selected objects. It is also useful for complex animations where you import animated scenes into other scenes.

.svg

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is a format for two-dimensional vector graphics, both static and animated.

It is advisable to create the vector shapes from Inkscape (Open Surce program) so that ENVE can correctly import path and gradient. A file imported from Adobe Illustrator does not interpret the gradient correctly.

.ora

OpenRaster is a proposed file format for the common exchange of layer-based images between Raster Graphics publishers. It is intended to replace older versions of Adobe’s PSD format. OpenRaster is still under development and is currently supported by only a few programs. The default file extension for OpenRaster is «.ora».

.kra

It is the file format of Krita (meaning crayon in Swedish), the digital painting and illustration software based on the KDE platform libraries and included in the Calligra Suite (formerly known as KOffice). Designed as a digital drawing and illustration suite, Krita is free software distributed under the GNU GPL license.

5.2. Drag and drop files

Drag and drop files SVG

In ENVE, if you drag and drop an SVG file onto the program, it is embedded instead of linked. This allows you to modify its shape and colour parameters as well as the different parts that make it up.

An object placed in this way does not appear in the Files palette because it is not linked but embedded.

Example Inkscape drag and drop logo image can be edited in its colour and shape properties.

Drag and drop an image

When dragging and dropping a bitmap image it is linked in the same way as when importing it Ctrl+I.

Drag and drop vídeo and audio

The result is the same as importing the file. It is possible to drag the file directly to the Timeline.

5.3. Import files

Shortcut: Ctrl+I

ENVE allows you to import a wide range of image and video files such as .png, .jpg, mp4, mov, flv, ora, kra…

All files imported into the scene can be reloaded, replaced and deleted.

You can also drag imported files from the Files palette into the Scene and create instances of the same file.

TIP: You can import images by dragging and dropping them onto the Scene.

Replacing the file from the Files palette will replace all instances.

TIP: This will not happen if you import an .svg, .ora or .kra file, you must link these file types.

To properly import an SVG with gradient (as in the Enve logo example) it will work fine if it is created in Inkscape.

Vector files can be imported from Adobe Illustrator but their gradient does not matter well.

5.3.1. Import image files

You can import multiple image file formats.

Once imported, the file will appear in the Files palette and from there you can select and drag multiple instances.

If you delete the image file on the canvas it will still be active in the Files palette unless you use the Delete function.

5.3.2. Import image sequence

To import an image sequence, open the menu File > Import image sequence… and select the folder containing the image sequence.

5.3.3. Import video

When importing video files, the video format and the frames per second (fps) of the scene and the video must be taken into account, if they do not match, the video may not be displayed correctly.

A video file that loads well without problems is .mp4 (video codec H 264).

You can control the volume of the video file by displaying its properties in the Timeline.

5.3.4. Import audio

The imported audio track also has its own audio track.

The duration of the audio file can be set by right-clicking on its track > Settings

Frame Shift: Position of the track on the Timeline

Min Frame: Primer frame

Max Frame: Last frame
